Detroit Hot Metro Finds Looks At The Smiths Band’s Influence On Alternative Radio

September 01, 2014 ) Detroit, Michigan - The British rock band,The Smiths, is the focus on Detroit based pop culture news site Hot Metro Finds. The article goes deep into the influence of guitarist Johnny Marr and iconic singerMorrissey and their 1986 tour to Detroit. The band played in Detroit at the Fox Theater at a time when Alternative Radio was still in its infancy. There are a lot of pro-Detroit people that make the claim that they were in attendance at this little known concert which was supporting the album, “The Queen Is Dead”.

The article looks at the rise of popularity in the UK as well as the slow climb to the pop conscious of the United States. The Smiths had no airplay to support the album and the main audience came from college campuses namely the University of Michigan. The Smiths were fairly unknown in the U.S. during 1986 and had only received a bit of exposure on MTV. The video for the album was for the track, “There Is A Light That Never goes Out”. This is told from a first person perspective from fans who lived through the rise of Alternative Radio in Ann Arbor and in Metro Detroit.

The rise of the Smiths was a brief and important chapter in Metro Detroit’s history. The concert helped open the doors for other acts that were going to set the bar for where pop music was to go in the near future. Bands like REM, Echo and the Bunnymen and INXS helped kick open the doors that gave rise to a wide range of UK and indie bands that toured thru Metro Detroit in 1987-1989. These bands included such names as The Pixies, The Replacements, X, Husker Du, The Sundays, The Lime Spiders and PIL just to name a few.

The breakthrough concert has earned its way into pop lore for Detroit locals today. Many claim they were at the show as the Smiths have earned their way into an iconic pop culture status. The article was written to keep perspective on the timelines of the alternative radio movement and to point out historical notes. Hot Metro Finds is dedicated to bringing light into what is myth and what is fact when it comes to pop culture events, concerts and unique musical history.
